Jack was born to William Jackson Hamilton, Jr. and Virginia Merle Anderson Hamilton in Warner Robins, Georgia on January 30, 1944.

He grew up in Decatur, Georgia and graduated from Decatur High School and Georgia Institute of Technology. On the day he graduated from Georgia Tech, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army and married the former Judy Lynn Hughes. He formed his own company, Capital Investments, Inc.

and Hamilton Commercial Realty, Inc. specializing in property acquisition for investment and development. He tied his own flies and was thrilled to catch that elusive trout with a fly that he had chosen and one that he had tied himself. Most of all he loved the opportunity fishing gave him to spend time with his sons.

He took them to Montana and to New Mexico, to Alaska and to Chile. Every trip he made included a side trip fishing, whether it be New England, Mexico, or even Scotland. He loved to teach others to fly fish and to share with others the importance to him of his relationship with God. At the age of 20 he was recruited to the Russian army at the start of World War II in which he fought with the allies.

After his unit was wiped out, he and one other solider survived and were left alone in a forest. They wandered through the forest until they finally boarded a train that ended up in Siberia where he worked in a munitions factory. Though he was not in a concentration camp, he suffered immensely through the terrible hardships he encountered in Russia lice, starvation, lack of clothing and shoes, as well as being threatened with a harsh jail sentence for observance of Rosh Hashanah. After the war he returned to Bialystok and realized his mother, father and sister were nowhere to be found. He hiked through the Alps until he reached Italy, where he learned of a relative in Cornelia, GA.

Upon immigrating to the United States via Ellis Island, he settled in Cornelia and was later encouraged by his late cousin Morris Gold to move to Atlanta. While working in the importing business in Atlanta he met Muriel Goldstein (of London, England), the woman he knew would be his wife.
